Base Oil Group – III

Description:
Group III base oils are ultra-refined paraffinic base stocks produced through severe hydrocracking, hydroisomerization, and hydrofinishing of high-quality crude oil. With their very high viscosity index (typically above 120), extremely low sulfur content, and outstanding oxidative stability, Group III oils are used in the formulation of premium lubricants that meet or exceed the most demanding automotive, industrial, and OEM specifications. These base oils offer performance characteristics approaching synthetic oils, and are often referred to as “synthetic technology” or “synthetic-grade” in the lubricant industry.

Production Process:

  • Severe Hydrocracking: Breaks down long-chain molecules and saturates aromatics for maximum purity

  • Hydroisomerization: Restructures molecules for improved cold flow properties and oxidative resistance

  • Hydrofinishing: Enhances clarity, color stability, and chemical durability

API Group III Base Oil Criteria:

  • Saturates: ≥ 90%

  • Sulfur Content: ≤ 0.03%

  • Viscosity Index (VI): ≥ 120
Note: Group III+ may offer VI ≥ 130, bridging the gap with synthetic PAOs.

Key Characteristics (Typical Ranges):

  • Water-clear and colorless appearance

  • Very low volatility – ideal for low-oil-consumption formulations

  • Excellent low-temperature performance

  • Superior resistance to oxidation, nitration, and thermal breakdown

  • Enhanced additive compatibility and blending flexibility

Benefits:

  • Exceptional thermal and oxidative stability for extended drain intervals

  • Excellent fuel economy performance in low-viscosity formulations

  • Reduced emissions and deposits, supporting cleaner engine operation

  • Low volatility and oil consumption, even in high-temperature environments

  • Superior cold start fluidity, suitable for modern engines and cold climates

  • Excellent shear stability, maintaining viscosity over time and use

Applications:

  • Passenger Car Motor Oils (PCMO): Especially for SAE 0W-20, 5W-30, and other low-viscosity grades meeting API SP and ILSAC GF-6/7

  • Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Oils (HDEO): Where high thermal and oxidation stability is required

  • Gear and Transmission Oils: For automotive and industrial systems demanding long-life performance

  • Hydraulic Fluids and Compressor Oils: Clean, high-performance base stock for critical systems

  • Synthetic Blends and Fully Synthetic Oils: Often used in formulations marketed as “synthetic”

  • Grease Production: As a high-quality base for advanced soap-based greases

Packaging Options:

  • Supplied in bulk, IBC totes, 200-liter drums, or flexitanks

  • Custom formulation support and packaging options available

Compliance & Standards:

  • Meets all specifications for API Group III base oils

  • Suitable for lubricants that meet or exceed API SP, ILSAC GF-6, ACEA C5, and major OEM approvals

  • Compatible with Group II, Group III+, and synthetic PAO base stocks

Available Grades:

  • 3cSt, 4cSt, 6cSt, 8cSt
Each grade offers a different viscosity profile, allowing formulators to tailor products to performance and climate requirements.
